TUNE

ABOUT TUNE

TUNE is a collection of ten instrumental pieces that I wrote over the last few years. The styles range from orchestral to solo guitar, to rock and pop.

Most had a tune that ran through my head while I was composing, but one which was not the main theme.  It was more of a musical backbone in the skeleton of the composition. And like backbones and skeletons, often, I didn’t expose the theme, or I buried or collapsed it.

How the collaboration came about.

In February, 2010 I approached Scot Howard, a Washington D.C. illustrator to see if he was interested in collaborating on TUNE. Scot is the talent behind The Digital Butterfly Project.  At that meeting, I played the music for Scot and we discussed how we could collaborate and he signed on for the whole thing then and there. Ten new illustrations!

Most of my music comes with a story inside. I played the music for Scot and told him each of the titles.  But he did not want to hear the story right away.  Scot wanted first to see what kind of story played out in his own head, just from the music and title.  The plan was that he would do this for about a month, come up with some proposed illustrations and we would go from there.

So after about a month we met and I looked at some of Scot’s rough concepts and one finished piece.  At lunch, I told Scot the story behind each piece and he was silent when I finished.  Then he said, the details vary, but he had heard the stories in various ways inside the TUNES.

These pieces are technically referred to as mockups. Besides writing all the music, I also played the various instruments that were used in the recording. They are a combination of acoustic instruments, synthesizers and samplers.

The Release

The 10 pieces of TUNE will be released one each week, on every Monday, starting today, January 24, 2011. TUNE is free for listening and sharing, but not for television, radio or any other media uses without permission.  Currently there is no plan beyond this release, no CDs or DVDs, though I can’t say that won’t change at some point in the future.

If you enjoy it, we would really appreciate your sharing TUNE with your friends and even putting it up on your web pages. There’s no Paypal or anything else to buy.  The full project is being released via the social media sites Facebook, Tumblr, Twitter and YouTube.

All Social Media sites involve interaction, so please join at www.Facebook.com/mylesmarlow , http://MylesMarlow.comhttp://Twitter.com/mylesmarlow and http://www.youtube.com/user/MylesMarlow/
